Port of San Diego increases its shore power capacity for cruise ships to improve air quality

December 7, 2023

The Port of San Diego is enhancing its B Street cruise ship terminal with additional shore power connectivity, a $676,273 investment awarded to Watts Marine LLC. This initiative aims to cut air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in and around San Diego Bay. The new connection point at B Street Pier's south berth expands the system's versatility for vessels with starboard connections.

The investment aligns with the Port's Maritime Clean Air Strategy to support a healthy bay, reduce air pollutants, and advance the Port’s commitment to the California Air Resource Board’s At-Berth Regulation.

Scheduled for completion in 2024, the third shore power connection underscores the port's pioneering efforts since 2010, making it a leader in California's green maritime initiatives. The second shore power plug was installed approximately one year ago, allowing for two ships to simultaneously use shore power rather than running their diesel engines while at berth.

The total investment in shore power infrastructure across cruise and cargo terminals now stands at approximately $24.7 million.
