The Port of San Diego is celebrating its 18th annual Green Port Month, a month-long celebration of its environmental progress and commitment to a sustainable waterfront. The initiative, launched in 2008, showcases projects, partnerships, and people dedicated to protecting San Diego Bay.
The Michelle White Environmental Awards kicked off the month during the September 9th Board of Port Commissioners meeting. Established in 2016 to celebrate the legacy of environmental advocate Michelle White, the awards recognize staff, tenants, and community members who have made significant contributions to the port’s sustainability efforts.
The board meeting also featured the release of the port’s Green Port Year in Review and the Maritime Clean Air Strategy (MCAS) Highlights Report. The reports provide updates on conservation programs, waterfront planning, the Blue Economy Incubator, and progress toward reducing harmful emissions. As of July 2025, 80% of MCAS objectives have been implemented, with an estimated $227 million invested in electrification and efficiency projects.
Alongside marking a year of environmental progress, the port’s staff actively engage in initiatives to make a tangible difference. Activities this month include collecting electronic waste, running an employee thrift shop, and volunteering on a service day to keep the waterfront clean and welcoming for everyone.
