On August 12th, the Government of Canada and the Government of Quebec announced significant financial support to the Port of Saguenay to establish a new electric transport system –a conveyor – between the industrial port zone and the ships docked at the Grande-Anse Marine Terminal.
Currently more than 60,000 trucks a year cross the Port of Saguenay territory to transport merchandise between the industrial zone and the railway facilities at Grande-Anse. The two-kilometre (1.2-mile) mechanized conveyor will transport bulk shipments more efficiently, while also reducing noise and dust emissions. Additionally, by eliminating trucks from the road, the Port of Saguenay is simultaneous planning to improve safety on its site.
The joint investment of $33 million by each government supports the port’s sustainable development and makes it possible to attract other structural investments to the region that create quality jobs.
