The Port of Olympia launched a research vessel in Budd Inlet on January 8, 2024, with the primary focus to investigate and mitigate harmful legacy pollutants, including dioxins and furans, embedded in the sediment of the Inlet. This initiative underlines the Port's dedication to rectifying past environmental mistakes and fostering a healthier ecosystem for future generations.
Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and an expert team, the research vessel will meticulously sample sediment over the next two months for laboratory analysis. These findings will inform a comprehensive plan for pollutant removal, aligning with the Port's vision of environmental remediation.
"Addressing legacy pollutants in Budd Inlet is not only a regulatory obligation but also an opportunity to contribute to a cleaner, safer environment for our community," said Camille St. Onge, Director of Strategic Initiatives and Commission Affairs for the Port of Olympia.
By spearheading these environmental initiatives, the Port also aims to stimulate economic growth and job opportunities within the community. Notably, this project has led to a valuable partnership with The Evergreen State College, providing students in the environmental program with invaluable field experience in research and restoration efforts.
