The Port of Oakland recently agreed to purchase up to $13.5 million of geothermal energy over 12 years starting in January 2025. The clean, reliable and fully renewable energy source will account for about 10% of the port’s annual overall energy portfolio and be used by the port and its seaport and airport tenants.
Geysers Power Company, which has one of the world's biggest and cleanest geothermal steam fields and largest complex of geothermal power plants, will provide the energy from its facilities about 75 miles (120 kilometres) north of San Francisco.
The geothermal energy is harnessed from the heat of the earth's core. Wells averaging 8,500 feet (2,590 metres) deep tap into naturally occurring steam field reservoirs below the earth's surface. The deepest well extends two miles (3.2 kilometres) underground.
