The Montreal Port Authority (MPA) has announced a new urban promenade project along its facilities in the Cité-du-Havre sector, near the Bickerdike terminal. The project will include a pedestrian pathway, railings, plantings, street furniture, a bicycle repair station and information panels on port activities that will be visible along the route.
The initiative is part of the MPA's 2023-2027 strategic plan, which calls for investments of $10 million in projects to improve the city-port interface. It also meets the Agenda 2030’s objectives of the International Association of Cities and Ports (IACP), which has the Port of Montreal among its signatory members.
"We're delighted to be able to offer Montrealers and visitors this space for observing our activities and to improve the urban space near our facilities,” Geneviève Deschamps, the MPA’s acting president and CEO, says. “This project is part of a long-term vision to improve the city-port interface and develop harmonious relations between the Port of Montreal and the surrounding community, which we have consulted."
The Promenade Bickerdike, named after the nearby terminal, will offer Montrealers and visitors a relaxing space with a privileged view of the port facilities and the area from the Bickerdike Terminal to the Old Port (Grand Quai).
Structural work is scheduled from late September to early December 2023, with tree planting and project completion scheduled for the return of fine weather in the spring of 2024.
