The Port of Hueneme has taken another step towards its zero-emissions goal with the launch of its second emissions capture and control barge. The new addition unveiled July 16th expands the port’s capacity to reduce ship-related air pollution at both of its terminals.
Developed by STAX Engineering, the patented mobile system connects directly to a vessel’s exhaust pipes and channels emissions into a barge-based purification unit. The barge technology captures up to 99% of particulate matter and 95% of nitrogen oxides, which are significant contributors to air pollution affecting the port’s surrounding residential communities. The ability to operate the system without requiring vessel modifications makes this a practical and scalable solution for maritime emissions control.
Known as STAX 6, the barge expands clean air operations throughout the port and ensures that all its commercial terminals are equipped with the latest emissions reduction tools. Port officials stated that this advancement reflects a strategic effort to blend operational efficiency with sustainability, while also addressing environmental concerns of nearby neighbourhoods.
The barge program is part of a broader network of initiatives aimed at fulfilling the port’s ZE2030 roadmap. In addition to emissions capture, the port is advancing projects such as shoreside power systems that facilitate ships connecting to shore power instead of running engines while at berth, as well as electrifying port vehicles and equipment. Through these combined efforts, the port is working towards becoming the first of its nation to reach zero emissions by the end of the decade, while maintaining its role as a vital economic engine.
