The Port of Hueneme recently secured a $2 million federal grant for planning a parking structure that will serve as a transfer point between ocean-going vessels and the rail or trucks used to transport automobiles. The new structure will increase operational efficiencies at this sixth largest U.S. auto port which will also improve air quality.
The Port Infrastructure Development Program grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation Maritime Administration aims to decarbonize and upgrade key California ports.
Port director and CEO Kristin Decas highlighted the importance of using some of the funds to build a greener parking structure, especially with 23% of the port’s automotive throughput being electric vehicles.
