Port of Halifax and PSA Halifax obtain remotely operated electric cranes

May 20, 2026

The Port of Halifax has installed two electric rail-mounted gantry cranes at PSA Halifax’s Atlantic Hub terminal to create the region’s first remotely operated yard equipment. The new cranes will increase reliability, capacity, and efficiency while lowering road congestion and air emissions.

They will also improve working conditions. Terminal operators will control the cranes from a centralized room, eliminating the need to work at heights or in challenging weather conditions.

By increasing container transport by rail, the cranes will reduce the amount of truck traffic from port activities. The new equipment is expected to reduce carbon emissions by at least 640 tonnes annually, comparable to removing 140 passenger vehicles off the road. It also contributes to PSA International’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The investment is tied to the Inter-Terminal Rail Solution Project, led by the Halifax Port Authority and supported by Transport Canada’s National Trade Corridors Fund.
