The Port of Galveston has commissioned SGS, a global leader in environmental sampling and analysis at ports, to develop a greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction plan as part of the port’s continuing commitment to sustainable growth and social responsibility. The plan will serve as a tool in alignment with Green Marine’s certification requirements to benchmark and subsequently reduce GHG emissions arising from port operations.
SGS began this process by first analysing the port’s 2021 and 2022 GHG inventories to develop strategies with the port to eliminate or reduce Scope 1 or Scope 2 emissions. The initial focus is on fuel and electricity consumption which are the port’s largest sources of direct and indirect emissions.
The Port of Galveston is now partnering with SGS to develop a port-wide inventory of GHG emissions – including carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, and sulphur hexafluoride – from all sources including ocean vessels, harbour craft, cargo-handling equipment, rail and truck services, and administrative duties.
Once the emissions accounting and reporting system is established, the port-wide inventory will be completed and followed by a plan for further reducing GHG emissions from the port’s activities, which includes following up on previous recommendations.
