Port NOLA secures $1-million grant for sustainable terminal project

January 14, 2025

The Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) has secured a $1 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to support the development of the Louisiana International Terminal (LIT) with key sustainability advancements.

The state-of-the-art facility is being planned through the Envision framework established by the Institute of Sustainable Infrastructure, a Green Marine Association member, to create a new terminal that prioritizes sustainability, resilience and community equitability.

Priorities include:

  • Emissions reduction: Targets include using cleaner equipment and achieving carbon neutrality.
  • Community investments: Workforce development and sustainability education programs for local organizations, such as the Lower 9th Ward Center for Sustainable Engagement, Nunez Community College, and Urban League of Louisiana.
  • Environmental stewardship: Protecting habitats and promoting the use of sustainable materials and practices.

The project represents a milestone for green infrastructure in Louisiana, supported by a public-private partnership with commitments from Ports America (a Green Marine participant) and MSC. It underscores Port NOLA’s leadership in environmentally conscious development while fostering economic growth and strategic inland connectivity.

Port NOLA will present more information about LIT when it welcomes delegates to GreenTech 2025, Green Marine’s annual conference, on June 9th.
