The Port of New Orleans has launched a new initiative called “Tour Your Port” to give the community the opportunity to see port operations from the vantage point of the Mississippi River. The free monthly tours each accommodate about 20 passengers aboard the port’s fireboat, the General Roy S. Kelley. The first tour, held March 31st, was fully booked within a week. The April and May tours were also quickly filled. Port NOLA has held tours for school and business groups for the past few years, but this is the first time it has created access on a first-come, first-served basis for any community member to learn about the port. Feedback from the first tour was very positive, and the port looks forward to meeting new people each month. The outreach is an important step in helping the community learn about the economic activity along the Lower Mississippi River and the port’s role in that commerce.
