This spring, Port Everglades reached a significant environmental milestone by welcoming its first cargo ship powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The Quetzal, operated by Crowley, made its inaugural U.S. port call in Broward County on April 17th as part of a new LNG-powered fleet trading in the United States, Central America, and the Caribbean. While the port has previously hosted cruise ships powered with LNG, this marks its first experience with such a cargo ship.
The Quetzal is one of four Avance Class vessels built for high efficiency and cleaner fuel performance. With a capacity for 1,400 TEUs and 300 refrigerated containers, it strengthens Port Everglades’ role as Florida’s leading port for perishable cargo while setting new standards for environmental stewardship.
Equipped with high-pressure ME-GI engines and engineered to minimize methane slip, these vessels significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As a Green Marine participant, Port Everglades’ capabilities to accommodate such vessels further demonstrates its ongoing commitment to reducing environmental impacts across its operations.
