Port Everglades finalizes shore power plan for cruise terminals based on a Green Marine partner’s analysis

February 6, 2023

Last spring, Port Everglades signed a $500,000 agreement with Florida Power & Light to explore providing electrical shore power to all eight cruise ship berths.

The study recently completed by global infrastructure advisory firm Moffatt & Nichol, a Green Marine partner, analyzed the existing electrical grid’s capacity and pinpointed the required infrastructure improvements to provide up to 16 megawatts of electricity simultaneously to each of the eight terminals and the various cruise ships calling at Port Everglades.

Intended to align with Broward County’s climate change goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the $160-million electrification initiative should reduce NOx emissions by 75%, sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions by more than 50% annually, and eliminate 11,366 metric tons of CO2. This level of GHG reduction is equivalent to removing emissions generated from more than 2,400 cars annually.

Construction is set to begin by mid-2024 at the earliest, with all phases of the project targeted for completion by the end of 2027.
