PNCT expands hybrid straddle carrier fleet with 20 new units

January 12, 2026

Port Newark Container Terminal (PNCT), operated by Ports America, has placed an order for 20 Hybrid Konecranes Noell straddle carriers, taking another important step in its fleet modernization. Finalized last year, the order is scheduled for delivery this fall.

The terminal has steadily been increasing its hybrid capacity, beginning with early models introduced in 2022 and followed by the purchase of 15 additional carriers two years ago. The hybrid system pairs a diesel generator with a battery to reduce fuel use and emissions.

The new carriers will handle ship-to-shore operations, stacking work, and truck and rail loading. According to PNCT’s engineering director, Charlie Ferlisi, previous hybrid units have delivered strong performance, prompting this new investment for further efficiency gains.

With this new order, PNCT is following Konecranes’ Ecolifting roadmap for decarbonizing port operations by adopting hybrid equipment that reduces fuel consumption and emissions while maintaining the performance required for its terminal operations.
