Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG) is extending the use of the graphene-based coating developed by Graphite Innovation & Technologies (GIT), a Green Marine partner, on seven additional crude oil tankers. The decision follows successful trials on an earlier vessel treated with the XGIT-PROP graphene-based propeller coating.
XGIT-PROP reduces underwater friction, thereby improving a vessel’s energy efficiency, which in turn lowers fuel consumption and associated CO2 emissions. With less hydrodynamic drag, vessels need less propulsion power to travel at the same speed, leading to lower fuel demand. This improved efficiency lowers costs and helps reduce the vessel’s environmental impact.
Philippos Sfiris, head of market strategy and vessel performance at GIT Coatings, stated, “We are happy to continue to lead the shipping industry towards a future that prioritizes energy savings and environmental responsibility.” With high-performance coatings like XGIT-PROP gaining traction among major operators, the company is helping redefine what sustainable shipping can look like without compromising efficiency.
