An initiative of the University of Victoria, Ocean Networks Canada is receiving $46.5 million over five years from the Ministry of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard to further enhance the country’s world-class ocean monitoring system. Both Ocean Networks Canada and DFO are Green Marine supporters.
Ocean Networks Canada operates the world’s most advanced cabled ocean observatories off the coast of British Columbia and in the Canadian Arctic. It also supports a network of deep sea and coastal ocean observatories that collect data to monitor ocean changes, including climate impacts and underwater noise on all three coasts. The support furthermore extends to oceanographic radar and ocean buoy monitoring efforts that provide real-time information on wave action and surface currents that help monitor conditions and prepare for extreme weather events.
By working with the science community, the federal government seeks to collect and share ocean information and data required to keep marine and coastal areas clean and safe long term. The investment in research stemming from Canada's Oceans Protection Plan will help to provide real-time, open data to better understand the changing oceans to protect ecosystems, support navigational safety, and inform emergency response planning.
