The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) continues its push toward zero-emission operations by completing the shore power infrastructure at Husky Terminal in Tacoma. On June 15th, the Hapag-Lloyd vessel Kuala Lumpur Express became the first to connect to the newly operational system.
Husky Terminal is now the second international terminal in Washington State to offer shore power, after Terminal 5 in Seattle. This is a significant step towards the NWSA’s ambitious goal of providing shore power at all international terminals by 2030.
The initiative is part of the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy aimed at eliminating maritime emissions by 2050. The project’s success relied on more than $3 million in public funding, and strong collaboration between the NWSA and key partners, including Husky Terminal, Hapag-Lloyd, Tacoma Public Utilities, and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 22.
