As part of its Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) program, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has given the Northwest Seaport Alliance $782,482 to replace diesel-powered cargo-handling equipment with cleaner-running electric models.
Through a partnership with Rail Management Services (RMS) and Tacoma Power, the Northwest Seaport Alliance’s grant will help RMS to replace six diesel-powered terminal tractors with a new electric fleet to achieve cleaner air during cargo-handling operations in Tacoma’s South Intermodal Yard. The initiative will eliminate 1.4 tons of diesel emissions and 260 tons of greenhouse gases annually.
The electric tractors are expected to be in operation late this year.
