Albany Port Railroad, operating at the Port of Albany, introduced its new Tier 4-compliant locomotive #2502. The locomotive represents an important environmental upgrade for rail operations within the port.
The locomotive was funded through NYS’ Passenger and Freight Rail Assistance Program. Albany Port Railroad was one of 25 projects selected to receive part of the $101 million invested in the state’s port and freight rail infrastructure. The funding helped offset the cost increases associated with replacing the company’s Tier 0 locomotive.
With a Cummins-built 1500hp engine (EPA-certified QST30), the locomotive is quieter and more environmentally friendly in line with Green Marine guidelines, reducing NOx emissions by 90%, decreasing fuel consumption by 15%, and increasing tractive effort and adhesion by 20%.
Richard Hendrick, CEO of the Port of Albany, emphasized the port’s dedication to the Green Marine program, noting that it became the first in New York State to join and has maintained continuous certification since 2016. He underscored the importance of collaborative environmental efforts among port tenants and maritime businesses.
