New Port Electrification Handbook outlines energy transition considerations

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has prepared a Port Electrification Handbook for the U.S. Department of Energy to help ports to make necessary energy transitions. The guidebook was prepared with the insights of various stakeholders, including Green Marine and a number of its members.

Integrating the many forms that port electrification can take – such as integrating electric cargo handling equipment, providing vessel shore power, creating a microgrid to power infrastructure – the handbook sets out to:

• Help port operators and planners to evaluate different electrification technologies
• Explain how electrification technologies could assist and/or affect ports and their surrounding communities
• Provide step-by-step considerations for port electrification.

The report provides straightforward explanations of the various technologies, as well as technoeconomic analysis tools and several case studies.
