The Société des Traversiers du Québec (STQ) has assumed ownership of the first of two new vessels powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) to service the Tadoussac – Baie Sainte-Catherine ferry route. The Armand-Imbeau II was constructed at the Davie Shipyard in Lévis, Quebec, and is the first LNG ship to be built in North America. The vessel will emit 90% less nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and no sulfur or particulate matter. Its azimuth propulsion system significantly limits vibration to reduce the vessel’s impact on the marine environment within an area regarded as critical habitat for beluga whales. The Armand-Imbeau II is scheduled to enter service in October. A second identical vessel will be delivered in January.
