GCT Global Container Terminals is acquiring 11 new rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes from Konecranes to reduce emissions at its terminals in British Columbia. The order includes 10 hybrid cranes for GCT Deltaport, and a fully electric crane for GCT Vanterm.
The hybrid cranes will reduce CO2 emissions by using both diesel and electric engines with a Fuel Saver System that optimizes energy use while maintaining lift performance.
At GCT Vanterm, the fully electric RTG represents a significant milestone. Fully battery-powered, the crane is equipped with an automated charging container. Its use on a pilot project basis provides a unique chance to explore zero-emission and entirely battery-powered technology in an operational setting.
The acquisitions are part of GCT’s broader environmental strategy, which aims for a 45% reduction in emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050.
