New framework supports emissions savings transparency through independently validated methodology

A new collaboration between Innospec and SGS, both Green Marine International partners, is providing vessel owners and operators with a documented approach for estimating emission savings associated with fuel efficiency improvements. It includes an emissions-savings certificate that quantifies estimated CO_₂ emissions savings compared with equivalent untreated fuel.

The program combines Innospec's Octamar^™ fuel additive technology with an emission-savings calculation methodology independently validated by SGS. The framework was developed to establish a transparent and consistent process for estimating emission savings through calculations aligned with ISO 14064-3 specifications.

The new framework builds on previous independent reviews of Innospec's Octamar^™ Fleet Performance solution. In 2022, the technology received an endorsement from ClassNK for its fuel economy benefits. In 2026, additional endorsements were received from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS).

Following successful onboard proof-of-concept trials, vessel owners subsequently incorporated Fleet Performance into their Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) Part III as a practical measure to maintain or improve Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) ratings.

By using an independently verified calculation methodology, the new Innospec-SGS framework supports a clearer understanding and communication of fuel efficiency improvements. The approach is aimed at stakeholders across the maritime value chain, including vessel owners, operators, charterers and technical managers.

The certificate documents the results of a comparison between fuel treated with Octamar^™ and equivalent untreated fuel. It provides a record of the estimated savings generated through the validated calculation process, while recognizing that the outcome represents an estimate rather than a direct measurement of a vessel’s emissions.

By combining their respective areas of expertise, Innospec and SGS are supporting greater transparency of emissions-saving initiatives in the maritime industry. The partnership reflects the value of collaboration in addressing the industry’s evolving environmental priorities.
