New Alcoa port facilities inaugurated at the Port of Trois Rivières

June 10, 2026

Alcoa and the Trois-Rivières Port Authority (TRPA) have officially inaugurated Alcoa’s new facilities at Wharf 17, improving the handling of raw materials destined for the Deschambault Smelter. The project reflects ongoing efforts to modernize the port while optimizing supply chain performance.

Funded through Alcoa's $71.8-million investment, the new facilities feature two fully electric, enclosed pneumatic unloading gantry cranes. Since entering service in January following their delivery in fall 2025, the equipment has increased unloading efficiency, strengthened operational performance, and reduced the environmental footprint of port operations.

“With Wharf 17, the Port of Trois-Rivières is demonstrating that the modernization of port infrastructure is a concrete driver of industrial transition," said Anick Métivier, President and CEO, TRPA. "By supporting Alcoa in integrating state-of-the-art equipment with a low environmental footprint, we are strengthening our role as a strategic partner to major industries while building a more efficient, sustainable, and resolutely forward-looking port.”

The new facilities are part of a broader $312-million investment in the modernization of Piers 16 and 17, which includes financial support from the governments of Canada and Quebec. The investment is intended to optimize overall port operations while delivering infrastructure that meets today's operational and environmental expectations.

Work at Pier 17 is now in its final stages, with the remaining efforts limited to installing electrical systems and fibre-optic infrastructure.
