Tacoma, WA, March 1, 2019 – Motive Power Marine’s E-Port Shipyard, Tacoma is joining the Green Marine environmental certification program for shipyards. Green Marine is a leading North American environmental certification program for the maritime industry. The program is a voluntary initiative to surpass regulatory requirements within the maritime industry.
Motive Power Marine is the first shipyard in the State of Washington, and the second in the United States, to seek the Green Marine Certification.
“We strongly feel while compliance standards are good, they don’t go far enough to provide mechanisms for a path toward sustaining a course of continuous improvement, which is the way the Green Marine framework is structured,” said Ben McDowell, ,Motive Power Marine’s president. “The Green Marine program goes hand-in-hand with our core value, which is built around leadership through environmental excellence.”
“We are very pleased to welcome Motive Power Marine, which significantly boosts the participation by shipyards and is very timely as Green Marine is working on the development of a new performance indicator on ship recycling,” added David Bolduc, Green Marine’s executive director. “It is also rewarding to see tenants of our port participants, such as the Northwest Seaport Alliance in this case, becoming members as a result of our program encouraging synergies.”
The Green Marine certification process is rigorous and transparent. Results are independently verified every two years. Each company’s results are published annually and made available online.
