More BC Ferries Terminals joining The Whale Trail

September 4, 2022

Two additional BC Ferries terminals have joined The Whale Trail, identifying a network of sites to view whales journeying through the Salish Sea and along the Pacific Coast. The Whale Trail aims to inspire appreciation and stewardship of orcas as well as other marine mammals and their environment.

By increasing shore-based whale watching, the Whale Trail projects hopes to build awareness about whales and their habitat. It is hoped that knowledge will inspire community stewardship in protecting this marine ecosystem with the goal of helping the Southern resident killer whale population to recover and thrive.

With the recent addition of the Bella Coola and Port Hardy locations, BC Ferries now has eight participating terminals along The Whale Trail. The six others are Tsawwassen, Campbell River, Langdale, Little River, Blubber Bay, and Skidegate. By the end of 2022, Duke Point and Prince Rupert will also join, bringing the total number to 10.

All the viewing sites offer interpretive signs identifying marine life observable from the shore, including dolphins, turtles, and other species.

In addition to building awareness about the importance of protecting marine environments, BC Ferries has annually evaluated its efforts to reduce underwater noise impacts since 2019 as part of its Green Marine environmental performance certification.
