Milwaukee's wind turbine's 10th anniversary

February 28, 2022

Port Milwaukee and the City of Milwaukee have been celebrating the 10th anniversary of the wind turbine near the port’s Administration Building. The installation completed on February 28, 2012, has come to symbolize Milwaukee’s commitment to a clean energy future.

The port and the city’s Environmental Collaboration Office (ECO) partnered on the installation of the Northern Power 100-kilowatt wind turbine. It was installed along Lake Michigan’s shoreline as part of Milwaukee’s goal to reduce community-wide net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 45% by 2030, and to achieve net-zero GHG emissions by 2050 or sooner.

Since its installment a decade ago, the wind turbine has generated more than 1.4 million kilowatt-hours of energy for the port, which is more electricity than it needs so the surplus is redirected to the city’s power grid.

Port Milwaukee has avoided releasing more than 1,025 tonnes of carbon dioxide to date as a result of the cleaner wind energy.
