The State of Michigan has released its first-ever Michigan Maritime Strategy, developed with input from more than 200 stakeholders and prepared collaboratively by state agencies and academic partners, including the University of Michigan Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, which is a Green Marine supporter. The plan sets a 10-year course to strengthen and modernize the state’s maritime sector while protecting the Great Lakes ecosystem.
Announced by Governor Gretchen Whitmer, the strategy outlines a long-term vision that aligns economic development with environmental stewardship. It emphasizes investment in infrastructure, innovation, workforce development, and clean energy to support both industry growth and ecological protection. State leaders describe the strategy as a collaborative framework designed to guide decision-making and investment across sectors.
Four main objectives shape the plan:
The priorities are supported by targeted actions, such as modernizing ports and intermodal infrastructure, supporting low-emission vessel technologies, and expanding Michigan’s maritime manufacturing base.
Developed through a year-long consultation led by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, the strategy brings together agencies, industry, and communities to ensure coordinated progress toward a sustainable maritime future.
