Mersey Marine Limited is the 20th shipyard to join Green Marine
Liverpool, NS – Mersey Marine Limited, a marine repair and maintenance facility located in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, is the newest participant in Green Marine, the leading voluntary environmental certification program for North America’s maritime industry. Mersey Marine Limited is the second location within the Mersey Group of companies to join the program, following Shelburne Ship Repair, which received its first certification in June 2022.
Mike Langille, the General Manager of Mersey Marine Limited, emphasized the company's commitment to sustainable development. “Joining Green Marine's comprehensive environmental program aligns perfectly with our vision,” he said. “The program’s detailed framework will guide us in meeting our commitment to continually improve our environmental performance.”
David Bolduc, Green Marine’s President, welcomes the new participant's commitment to sustainability. “As the third shipyard in Nova Scotia to join the program, we hope Mersey Marine Limited will inspire other shipyards in the region towards more sustainable operations with measurable improvements,” he said. “By participating in Green Marine, Mersey Marine Limited has access to a step-by-step template to reach ambitious but achievable goals that deliver real environmental benefits and set the bar higher for all of the industry.”
Mersey Marine Limited had already been actively pursuing sustainability through various initiatives. The company is currently researching the viability of repurposing waste vegetable oil from food services as a non-polluting lubricant for its marine railway, with the aim of avoiding water contamination. The shipyard also recently invested more than $60,000 to replace sodium lights with efficient LEDs, resulting in a significant reduction in its carbon footprint. Moreover, the shipyard is now evaluating the most eco-friendly way to handle dredging sediment.
To achieve Green Marine certification, Mersey Marine Limited will assess its environmental performance through indicators that address issues such as greenhouse gases and air pollutants, spill prevention and stormwater management, waste management, and community impacts and relations. The certification process is rigorous and transparent, with results independently verified every two years and each participant's individual performance made public annually.
