The Institut nordique de recherche en environnement et en santé au travail (INREST) will implement an Enviro-Actions project at the Baie des Sept-Îles, thanks to the financial support of the Port of Sept-Îles, which is a Green Marine participant, and the Quebec government. They are contributing nearly $2.5 million and $2 million respectively.
A proactive environmental management system will be set up to promptly detect possible environmental contamination affecting water quality, underwater noise levels or air quality – all issues addressed by the Green Marine program. The alerts system will help industrial and port area managers to make quicker decisions in terms of corrective measures to avoid crossing any critical thresholds of contamination and thereby better protect ecosystems.
The Port of Saguenay will also actively participate in implementing the project’s practical and technological aspects. In particular, the port will support the installation of equipment and real-time monitoring technologies in its environment, which will allow the collection and transmission of new data on the Saguenay-St. Lawrence marine ecosystem.
Totaling nearly $4.5 million, the project has been made possible by the know-how and tools developed by the Sept-Îles Bay Environmental Watch Observatory, which was established in 2013 and is managed by INREST.
