Innovation Maritime develops special platform to mitigate ship noise

July 15, 2025

A unique testing platform capable of reproducing the sound conditions of an operating ship has been developed by Innovation Maritime in partnership with Université de Sherbrooke and Davie Shipyard. It will help to determine the noise that interferes with the abilities of marine mammals and other sensitive species, such as invertebrates, to survive.

The platform is comprised of a steel structure, representing the section of a ship, and equipped with acoustic and vibration instruments. By simulating different machinery, researchers can monitor noise propagation and evaluate the effectiveness of various mitigation measures. This approach in a controlled environment facilitates the more precise management of the factors measured and decreases research timelines and costs.

Conducted tests have shown the effectiveness of certain traditional solutions, such as vibration isolators, while exploring the potential of innovative measures based on resonant metamaterials, such as acoustical and mechanical resonators. The platform helps to identify the most effective solutions and determine their optimal placement on board. Over time, it will contribute to the commissioning of quieter ships to minimize disruptions to marine life.

This project is featured in a series of articles published by Clear Seas and funded by Transport Canada, both Green Marine supporters. Titled “Quiet Vessel Initiative: Technology, design, and operational measures for quieter Canadian waters,” the series sheds light on the issue of underwater noise and explores how research and innovation can pave the way for quieter, healthier oceans.
