Important contribution to the Quiet Vessel Initiative

November 9, 2020

Transport Canada has announced a $2.5 million financial contribution under the Quiet Vessel Initiative, a research program that aims to reduce vessel noise that disrupts underwater acoustics and can disturb and even harm marine species.

The investment will help to establish and operate a new Marine Acoustics Research Station in the St. Lawrence Estuary to measure and reduce underwater noise. In addition to stimulating technical and practical innovation to make ships quieter, the results of this project will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of new ideas.

Various Canadian expertise will be a part of this collaborative research, including the Institut des sciences de la mer de Rimouski (ISMER) at the Université du Québec à Rimouski, as well as Innovation maritime (IMAR, Institut maritime du Québec), Multi-Électronique (MTE), and OpDAQ Systems – all three being Green Marine partners.
