The Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority has installed a total of 20 new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at its Hamilton and Oshawa ports to get closer to its goal of net zero for Scope 1 emissions by next year.
Natural Resources Canada’s Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP) made the installations possible as part of its program to raise awareness and interest in lower-carbon vehicles and fuels. Expanding the charging infrastructure addresses range anxiety, which boosts confidence in acquiring EV vehicles as part of the shift towards cleaner transportation alternatives.
A total of 19 EV charging stations have been added to the four already installed at the Port of Hamilton in September 2019, which have been used regularly for more than 50 charging sessions per month by port staff, visitors and neighbours. In 2021 alone, the four EV charging stations resulted in lowering greenhouse gases by 11,163 kilograms – the equivalent of planting 185 trees.
The 23 stations at the Port of Hamilton and the one installed at the Port of Oshawa are now averaging 400 sessions per month which will total GHG savings of 58,000 kg by the end of this year.
