Highest international accreditations earned by SMIT Marine Canada

September 9, 2014

SMIT Marine Canada chose Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance, a leading international certification body, to carry out an assessment of the company’s Integrated Management System (IMS) against the four internationally recognized benchmarks for safety, quality and environmental protection, namely: ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 and the ISM Code.
After extensive preparation that included various education and training sessions, meetings, internal audits, and the creation and implementation of a quality documentation system, SMIT underwent the external assessment by LRQA in February and received all four certifications simultaneously in May.
The external and unbiased recognition marks a milestone in the company’s efforts to improve its operations. The IMS had been developed and implemented over two years. Guided by Bob Beadell of Invicta Marine Ltd., which offers assistance and support in safety, environmental and security management, and Hilary Miller, SMIT Canada’s Safety, Health, Environment and Quality Officer, employees throughout the organization have worked to implement the system and provide valuable feedback to make improvements.
“Attaining this certification speaks to our continuous effort to improve internal process disciplines to ensure the utmost in safety, health, the protection of the environment, and quality, and to provide first-class service to our customers,” says Frans Tjallingii, SMIT Canada’s president.
