Sanmar Shipyards in Türkiye has delivered the third battery electric tugboat, Haisea Brave, to HaiSea Marine, a joint venture that is majority owned by the Haisla Nation in partnership with Seaspan ULC. Haisea Brave is the last of a three-ship order to be delivered, the Haisea Wamis and HaiSea Wee'Git having been delivered earlier this year. The new vessel will operate in Vancouver before moving to LNG Canada's Kitimat facility.
Built on the innovative ElectRA 2800 SX design by Canadian naval architects and Green Marine partner Robert Allan Ltd, these tugs boast dimensions of 28.4 x 13m and a 5.9m draft, equipped with 6,000 kWh of battery capacity, which is equivalent to the power required to run about 70 Tesla vehicles all day.
With a 70-tonne bollard pull, they handle ship berthing and unberthing tasks solely on battery power. Taking advantage of clean hydroelectric power in Kitimat, the tugs will recharge at dedicated shore facilities between tasks, ensuring zero emissions during operations.
