GreenTech 2023: Green Marine's 9th carbon-neutral conference

July 20, 2023

GreenTech 2023, which took place June 12 to 14 in Seattle, received Planetair certification as a carbon-neutral event. This year's event had a larger environmental footprint in terms of tons of CO2 emitted per delegate than GreenTech 2022, with emissions of 0.78t per delegate compared to 0.46t per delegate last year. This increase is primarily due to delegates having traveled from as far away as Eastern Canada, Europe and Australia.

For this ninth GreenTech edition, Green Marine once again purchased high-quality carbon credits to offset its emissions and minimize the ecological footprint of its annual conference. All factors were taken into consideration: accommodations, meals, supplies, printing, shipping, land and air transportation for all 341 delegates in attendance, for a total of 267.74 tonnes of CO2 emitted.

* Having estimated the transportation of the reusable cups and the residual materials they generated to be less than a tonne, Planetair recommended offsetting an additional tonne, or 1,000 kg of GHGs.

GreenTech 2023 generated almost double the emissions of the 2022 conference, which recorded 135.42 tonnes of CO2. The increase due to a 15% increase in the number of delegates, who mainly traveled to Seattle by plane, but also by vehicles.

Emissions will be offset through the Planetair Global Portfolio, which is made up of various projects, all Gold Standard certified, that enable GHG emissions to be counteracted in a real, transparent, verified additional way.

Thank you to the Chamber of Marine Commerce for sponsoring the carbon offset costs which made it possible for Green Marine to present a carbon-neutral 16th annual conference!

Green Marine is always looking for ways to minimize the environmental impacts of its annual conference which is deemed essential for valuable networking to improve the maritime industry’s overall sustainability. GreenTech 2023 featured reusable coffee cups that delegates were encouraged to use at the conference and when they arrived back at their office or home.
