Drawing on 20 years of experience working with young people, ÉcoMaris is helping vulnerable young adults by providing temporary shelter and professional guidance aboard the ÉcoMaris2 vessel moored at the Port of Quebec between October and April.
The CasaMaris program offers transitional housing and a supportive environment to young adults between the ages of 18 and 30 who are in a precarious situation, experiencing social disconnection, or want to prevent or end their homelessness.
Fednav is a leading supporter of the program. Other Green Marine members providing support include the Port of Quebec, Océan Group, Desgagnés, QSL, the Port of Montreal, the Port of Saguenay, the Port of Sept-Îles, the Port of Trois-Rivières, l’Institut Maritime du Québec, and the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation.
The six-week program is designed to give individuals a chance to feel safe and supported, so they can take stock of their lives, rebuild their self-confidence, and plan a new positive outlook for their future.
Up to 24 adults occupy the 10 private cabins during each of four sessions. They develop healthy eating habits, culinary skills and teamwork strengths in the large professional kitchen where they prepare their meals together.
They also learn about navigation and possible seafaring employment, as well as obtain help with social assistance, affordable housing placement, banking, tax filing and other life essentials.
The CasaMaris team consists of two doctors, a psychologist, a social worker, 12 seafaring facilitators, as well as special educators. Post-placement follow-up is provided for everyone who takes part in a program. ÉcoMaris makes it clear that it is the host family of CasaMaris, a home where the young adults can return at any time to check in, refocus, seek advice on dealing with a new challenge, or to pursue a maritime career.
