Since its launch in 2009, Green Marine Magazine has become a trusted source for insights into environmental initiatives within the maritime industry. Each issue features projects, innovations and achievements that reflect the commitment of Green Marine members to a more sustainable future.

From February through July 2025, the magazine issued four inspiring articles showcasing the diversity and scope of actions being carried out by Green Marine members. They cover the environmental journey of the Port of Québec under Mario Girard, various applications of artificial intelligence in maritime operations, a decade of environmental progress at the Port of New Orleans, and BMO’s sustainable finance solutions to support the transition towards net zero.

AI and machine learning into maritime tasks

The capacity of artificial intelligence (AI) to sort through massive amounts of data quickly is leading to its integration in most industries, including maritime transportation. From optimizing vessel scheduling to monitoring whale populations, Green Marine is already seeing its positive applications by an increasing number of members, as well as the exploration of its potential in terms of machine learning to automate tedious and/or potentially dangerous tasks.

10 years of environmental engagement at Port NOLA

The Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) is a diverse port located along the Mississippi River. The deepwater port has unparalleled access to more than 30 major inland hubs via 14,500 miles (23,335 kilometres) of waterways, six Class I railroads, and interstate roadways transporting cargo across the continental United States, as well as into Canada and Mexico.

This Green Marine Magazine article celebrates a decade of environmental leadership for the Port of New Orleans, host of the GreenTech 2025 conference.
