Québec City, June 4, 2010 – A mere two years after its official launch, Green Marine is already among the finalists at the Sustainable Shipping Awards 2010. Along with two other finalists, Green Marin is nominated in the Green Shipping Initiative of the Year category, one of six categories in the competition whose prestigious prize is designed to highlight and reward environmental excellence in initiatives taken by the marine industry around the world.
Over the last few years, the environment has become a priority for the marine industry since certain challenges, such as air emissions and invasive aquatic species, are currently of pressing concern. To this end, SustainableShipping.com, an online information source devoted to shipping and the environment founded in 2005, launched this competition two years ago with the aim of rewarding the efforts made by the marine industry to improve its environmental performance.
The prizes will be presented June 24 at the Cumberland Hotel in London, England. The jury of the Sustainable Shipping Awards 2010 will consist of eight organizations involved in the field of shipping and the environment: Hong Kong Shipowners Association; IKEA UK; SustainableShipping.com; Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics; New Scientist; BIMCO; WWF International and Lloyd’s Register.
Aside from the jury members, more than 150 experts from the marine industry will come together for this event, which will recognize companies and industry initiatives that make a difference by helping to reduce the environmental footprint.
« Green Marine is honoured to have been chosen among initiatives from around the world and will attend the awards ceremony on June 24 in London », mentioned David Bolduc, Executive Director of Green Marine. « This nomination confirms Green Marine’s growing success and the credibility of its environmental programme as well as its transparent and thorough evaluation process », he added.
Speaking of success, Green Marine’s membership is constantly growing and has just passed the 100-member mark. In May 2010, VapCor Inc. and World Wildlife Fund Canada joined the organization, bringing the official number of members to 101. The organization counts 44 participants, 29 partners and 28 supporters who believe in Green Marine’s mission and work each and every day to create a greener marine industry.
