Grand Quay at the Port of Montreal powered with 100% renewable energy

August 14, 2024

By adding renewable natural gas (RNG) as a new energy supply solution, the Montreal Port Authority (MPA) has been supplying the Grand Quay at the Port of Montreal with 100% renewable energy since the start of this year.

The RNG distributed by Énergir has facilitated the MPA reaching a new milestone in reducing the carbon emissions for the location, which has several venues available for public and private large-scale events. The Grand Quay includes the Port of Montreal Tower, the 3,500-square-metre (37,673-square-foot) Cruise Terminal, the Pavilion on the green roof and the Port Centre.

By replacing the fossil natural gas previously used for heating and cook systems during events with RNG, the carbon footprint of the Grand Quay’s events has been reduced significantly.

What is RNG?

RNG is a renewable source of energy produced 100% from organic waste that helps cut greenhouse gas emissions. By capturing biogas from landfill sites or through a process of biomethanization, organic matter (food residues, liquid manure, manure, wastewater, etc.) is turned into biogas which, once purified, becomes renewable natural gas. Biogas has a positive impact in two ways: it replaces fossil energy with renewable energy, and it recovers the methane emissions associated with burying organic waste in landfill sites. By opting for RNG, there's no need to change equipment. It allows to keep costs down, while accelerating the energy transition.
