On World Environment Day this June 5th, Global Container Terminals (GCT) celebrated the full deployment of renewable fuels at its GCT Vanterm terminal in Burrard Inlet at the Port of Vancouver.
Implemented in August 2024, the transition replaces all conventional diesel with renewable alternatives, reducing emissions by 68% during the first full quarter of use.
The initiative was made possible through a partnership with the Burnaby Refinery and the SPAL General Constructors Corporation, owned by the Tsleil-Waututh Nation. The collaboration exemplifies GCT’s commitment to Indigenous economic inclusion, aligning with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action #92.
By choosing drop-in renewable fuels, GCT can significantly reduce operational emissions without prematurely retiring equipment. This initiative is a key part of the company’s broader climate strategy to achieve a 45% absolute reduction in emissions by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050. The successful deployment at GCT Vanterm sets the stage for renewable fuel adoption at all GCT terminals in 2025.
