Global Container Terminals (GCT) has established a $200,000 fund to support Indigenous-led initiatives aimed at increasing both participation and collaboration in the cumulative-effects assessment of the South Salish Sea off British Columbia’s coast. GCT created the fund in response to the calls for action voiced by many Indigenous leaders at the historic Declaration Conference on January 14, 2020. The conference gathered Indigenous, business and government leaders with the aim of building a collective understanding of the principles established by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). It highlighted critical issues and potential opportunities, including the need for Indigenous-led efforts to assess cumulative effects.
