Galveston Wharves shares its sustainability progress and priorities

April 2, 2026

Galveston Wharves has released its 2025 Green Marine Sustainability Report, outlining its initiatives and activities for all of last year, along with its 2024 environmental performance results. The report presents the initiatives relating to the Green Marine certification program implemented by Galveston Wharves in 2025 and the priorities guiding the port’s continuing efforts.

The report outlines progress across key areas that include air quality, water management, waste reduction, and clean energy use. Among the most notable developments is the port’s transition to electricity that is sourced entirely from renewable energy. The combined wind and solar power has already contributed to a measurable reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Other initiatives include:

  • Regular inspections and monitoring under stormwater pollution prevention and spill control plans.
  • Continued planning work for shore power solutions aimed at reducing vessel emissions at berth.
  • Progress on a pilot microgrid project funded through a state environmental grant.
  • Sustainable design features incorporated into newly completed cruise terminal infrastructure.
  • Community and employee engagement activities focused on shoreline cleanup and environmental stewardship.

The report also sets out the port’s 2026 priorities, which include further reducing greenhouse gas emissions, continuing the development of clean energy solutions, enhancing waste management practices, and maintaining engagement with tenants and community partners as part of its participation in the Green Marine certification program.
