Five St. Lawrence ports join forces with North Sea Port to bolster collaboration

January 30, 2025

The North Sea Port, a 60-kilometre (37-mile) port area connecting the Netherlands and Belgium, has signed a signed a collaboration agreement with the port authorities of Montreal, Trois-Rivières, Quebec, Saguenay, and Sept-Îles to optimize trade, drive innovation, and accelerate the transition to more sustainable maritime transportation.

Expanding the partnership initially established between the Port of Quebec and the North Sea Port in 2018, the agreement integrate four additional ports in the Province of Quebec to further build ties between the St. Lawrence maritime corridor and Northern Europe.

Shared goals under the strategic alliance include enhancing supply chain efficiency with a focus on bulk cargo transportation, and improving port operations through business intelligence. The collaboration also sets out to foster innovation by connecting businesses, research institutes, and universities to test and adopt new maritime technologies.

On the environmental front, the partners commit to exploring low-carbon solutions, including alternative fuels and greener port infrastructure. The goal is to implement sustainable practices that benefit all stakeholders in maritime transport.

With Canada ranking as North Sea Port’s fourth-largest trading partner, this agreement strengthens cooperation between the two regions and opens new opportunities for businesses on both continents.
