Thordon Bearings has collaborated with CSignum in launching the first wireless system for monitoring the wear of seawater-lubricated propeller shaft bearings. The new Bearing Condition Monitoring – Wireless (BCM-W) system uses patented electromagnetic field signaling (EMFS) technology to transmit data from underwater sensors to a receiver above the waterline, which eliminates the need for complex wiring or shaft withdrawal during installation. Real-time data on bearing clearance is provided, which facilitates ship operators detecting issues such as shaft misalignment before they lead to costly repairs.
Easy to install in dry dock or afloat, the system transmits data to a topside modem for uploading to tablets or laptops, which reduces the need for diver inspections and minimizing downtime. The BCM-W can also integrate with other sensors to monitor additional conditions, such as temperature and salinity, offering a comprehensive view of the ship's underwater hull condition.
