A partnership between the Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority and REV LNG allowed the refueling of a marine vessel with liquefied natural gas (LNG) for the first time ever on the Great Lakes in December 2020. The MV Damia Desgagnés was to first ship to refuel with LNG during a stopover at the Port of Hamilton before continuing on its route to Detroit. Any other marine vessel now also has the possibility to do so at the port.
The new partnership represents a significant step toward greener energy use by the maritime sector within the Great Lakes. The LNG initiative can reduce GHG emissions by 21% in the entire well-to-wake lifecycle, significantly improving air quality by eliminating all sulphur (SOx) and particulate matter, and 90% of nitrogen oxide (NOx).
