First battery-electric ferries ordered in the U.S. by San Francisco Bay Ferry

December 12, 2024

San Francisco Bay Ferry has approved the purchase of the first three battery-electric, zero-emission high-speed ferries in the United States from All American Marine (AAM). The 150-passenger vessels are part of the agency's Rapid Electric Emission Free (REEF) program. They will operate on new routes connecting the rest of the region to two of San Francisco’s fastest growing neighborhoods, Treasure Island and Mission Bay. The first ferry is expected to begin service in early 2027.

The 100-foot (30-metre) long ferries will operate at 24 knots, powered by dual 625-kilowatt electric motors. AAM will build the vessels at its Washington facility, leveraging over 30 years of experience in aluminum shipbuilding. Teknicraft Design will partner as the project's naval architect. Aurora Marine Design led the conceptual design for the vessels.

The $46-million contract includes an option for a fourth vessel.

San Francisco Bay Ferry is pursuing other clean-energy projects, including two larger 400-passenger battery-electric ferries for transbay routes, as well as terminal electrification. The agency has secured $200 million in funding for these initiatives, aiming to make zero-emission water transit a regional and national standard. This includes state and federal funding for system planning, new battery-electric vessels, and shoreside infrastructure.
