Maritime history was made July 31st when Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding delivered the largest vessel compliant with the U.S. Jones Act.
The 416-foot (almost 127-metre) liquid natural gas (LNG) bunker barge was delivered to a privately operated U.S. logistics, marine and energy solutions company and will provide ship operators in Savannah, Georgia, with access to a cleaner energy source.
With its 12,000 square feet (1,114 square metres), the barge can transport 3.17 million U.S. gallons (almost 2.7 million Imperial gallons) of LNG, which is reported to emit almost one-quarter less greenhouse gas emissions compared to very or ultra-low sulphur fuel oil.
The barge is the third such LNG vessel constructed by Fincantieri.
