CSL unveils its 2021 sustainability report

July 7, 2022

The ninth annual sustainability report issued by CSL presents the company's progress in ongoing initiatives on environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues.

In addition to devoting a full page to the company’s Green Marine environmental performance, the report outlines concrete actions undertaken or completed by the company over the past year in terms of governance, health and safety, decarbonization, and the protection of marine life and other identified priorities. As with each of its recent annual reviews, this report also notes CSL's progress toward its goals of zero injury/damage to people, planet or property, and its alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Highlights of the 2021 report include:

  • The use of B100 biodiesel on eight vessels, resulting in an 80% reduction in the life-cycle CO2 equivalent (CO2e) emissions compared to marine diesel use
  • 26% reduction in CO2e per ton of cargo transported in 2021 compared to 2005
  • 61% reduction in crew waste per daily operation compared to 2010
  • Six ballast water treatment systems installed within the global fleet
  • Three vessels recycled in the most responsible manner possible

By comparing this report to CSL's initial sustainability review published in 2013, it is clear to see the company's significant progress in enhancing a performance-based sustainability culture and adopting globally recognized best practices for progress measurement and reporting.
